Zach Ertz clears waivers, Eagles expected to have interest in re-signing him

The veteran tight end could be coming back to Philly.

As soon as Zach Ertz was granted his release from the Cardinals, it seemed like a reunion with the Eagles was on the horizon. The veteran tight end had to clear waivers, of course, but he did just that — and thankfully so, because the Ravens were a potential interested team after they lost Mark Andrews. In his request for release, JJ Watt included a note that Ertz wanted to play for a contender, and what better place for him to land than back in Philly.

NFL insider Adam Schefter reports the Eagles are indeed interested in re-signing him:

His family is still here. His organization is still here. And now, Ertz and his recently retired wife Julie, might get to bring their son back to a place they for so long called home.

Dallas Goedert finally returned to Eagles practice on Friday, but he’s officially doubtful for the 49ers game on Sunday. Grant Calcaterra is out for the matchup, so that leaves just Jack Stoll, Albert Okwuegbunam, and Noah Togiai (on the practice squad) at tight end.

Even if Ertz takes an adjustment to get back on the field, he’s familiar with a lot of guys on the roster, including Jalen Hurts, and did have a whole offseason and training camp with Nick Sirianni in 2021. Quite a bit has changed since then, but the tight end’s work ethic and commitment have been one of his strengths over the years, and that’s bound to help him get ready as fast as possible.

It was bittersweet when Ertz was traded to the Cardinals, a team at the time whose outlook looked much more promising than it does in 2023, but he was always meant to be in Philly. That’s where he started his career, made a name for himself, and played some seriously impressive football.

Hopefully he will return home soon.
