Zach Wilson seems to be playing through an injury, but Robert Saleh is not concerned

According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson suffered a groin injury during the team’s Week 1 loss to the Carolina Panthers, which he played through in Week 2 against the New England Patriots.

“Wilson, the No. 2 pick in April, suffered a groin injury during the 19-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, according to a source,” Howe writes. “He played through it Sunday during a 25-6 loss to the New England Patriots, and the injury could potentially require maintenance throughout the season.”

Howe adds, “As it currently stands, there’s no reason to believe Wilson will miss any games with the groin injury. He got an MRI to ensure there was no further damage.”

Head coach Robert Saleh was not concerned about the injury when discussing it with the media on Thursday.

“He just woke up a little bit sore,” Saleh said. “Since they touched him in the training room, he has to go on the list. But it’s not a concern.”

Wilson had a rough Week 2 outing in his MetLife Stadium debut against the New England Patriots. He completed 19 of 33 passes for 210 yards, zero touchdowns, and four interceptions (6.4 yards per attempt and a 37.0 passer rating).

One of the recurring issues throughout Wilson’s performance against New England was his accuracy. He posted a completion percentage versus expectation of minus-7.6 percent, via NFL Next Gen Stats, which ranked fifth-worst among qualified passers in Week 2.

When looking at Wilson’s film, many of his misses were high. There were quite a few passes where he threw the ball over the receiver’s head.

Obviously, it is completely speculative to suggest that the groin injury may have affected Wilson’s performance against New England, but this is a situation that will be worth monitoring throughout the season.

Wilson and the Jets head to Denver to take on the 2-0 Broncos this Sunday. He will attempt to put together a better performance than the one that top overall section Trevor Lawrence had against the Broncos last week, which featured 14 completions on 33 attempts for 118 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions (3.6 yards per attempt and a 37.2 passer rating).
