Buccaneers NFL Draft Target: Boston College Offensive Lineman, Christian Mahogany

Could the Bucs look to add more depth along the offensive line?

Entering the 2024 offseason, the Buccaneers had a need along the interior of their offensive line. Depending on who you asked, they could have had multiple needs along the interior. They didn’t do much in free agency to address that either, signing depth pieces in Ben Bredeson and Sua Opeta. While Robert Hainsey is still in the mix at center or guard, they could certainly use another piece there.

A name that could really make sense for them is Boston College’s Christian Mahogany.

Christian Mahogany’s Collegiate Career

Mahogany was a key piece along Boston College’s offensive line as he started 12 games at right guard for the Eagles in 2023 and was named first team all ACC for his performance. During his time at college, he had 23 starts at right guard and 11 starts at left guard so he does have some versatility that teams will like.

However, before the 2022 season began, he suffered a torn ACL during a at home workout which caused him to miss the entire season. Even though he was able to rebound and play in 2023, a major injury like that is definitely something to take note of when considering him.

Scouting Combine and Pro Day

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Mahogany performed in a lot of the drills, posting a 5.13 40 yard dash, a 1.74 10 yard split, a 7.81 three cone drill and a 4.53 20 yard shuttle. He also recorded a 32.5 inch vertical jump as well as a 9’ 1” broad jump. Surprisingly though, he did not participate in the bench press.

At the Boston College pro day, Mahogany did not participate in any metric drills but instead did positional drills.

What Mahogany Can Do For The Bucs In 2024

He is not a finished product at guard by any means, but that doesn’t mean Mahogany couldn’t contribute for the Bucs in year one. Since he has experience at both right and left guard, the Bucs could use his versatility to their advantage. He would likely come in and compete for the starting job at the left guard spot and even if he didn’t win the job out of camp, would be a valuable piece off of the bench.

Mahogany likely won’t be a superstar in year one, but that doesn’t mean he can’t play a role for the 2024 Buccaneers.

Three-Year-Outlook

Development of players has its ups and downs but if all goes well, there is a real chance that he could be the Bucs starting left guard for years to come. He is a good run blocker which Tampa Bay will value and hopefully be able to develop in their system. The Bucs need more help along the interior and drafting Mahogany could certainly help solve some of the issues they’ve had, even if it may take an extra year or two.

Stock Report

Right now, Mahogany projects to be a day two selection, most likely being in the third round somewhere. With the Bucs having two third round picks this year, it could make sense for them to use one on a guy like Mahogany, regardless of if they have already taken an interior offensive lineman earlier.
