Blake Lynch played for the Chargers in the preseason before being among final cuts.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Chargers announced the signing of linebacker Blake Lynch to the practice squad. Lynch played with the Chargers during this year’s preseason but ended up among the team’s final cuts in early September.

In a corresponding move, the team released edge rusher Ty Shelby to make open a spot.

Lynch played his college football at Baylor where he saw time at several positions, including safety, linebacker, and running back. He went undrafted in 2020 before signing with the Vikings where he stayed for two seasons. Lynch then spent the 2022 season as a member of the Arizona Cardinals.

The Chargers haven’t had any notable injuries to the linebacker group but this sounds more like a move to improve special teams. If Eric Kendricks, Kenneth Murray, Nick Niemann, and Daiyan Henley are all healthy, I can’t imagine this has anything to do with needing more bodies in the room.
