Chauncey Golston might be the least talked about Dallas Cowboys rookie

The Cowboys rookie defensive ends deserves more love.

The Dallas Cowboys had one of the worst defenses in the National Football League last year and this offseason committed to a change on that side of the ball. Change began with the swapping out of coordinators with Mike Nolan out after just one year and Dan Quinn in after being dismissed as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons before last season even hit the midway point. Change involves more than just the staff as the Cowboys saw longtime veterans Sean Lee and Tyrone Crawford retire while choosing not to bring certain other players back. Ultimately this meant that the Cowboys had to go out and get some new players.

Dallas picked 11 different times during the 2021 NFL Draft, and more often than not they chose to help the defensive side of the ball. The Cowboys actually spent their first six picks on defense which was a first in franchise history. Again, change was needed.

Ultimately the Cowboys drafted somebody from every position on defense but only once at defensive end. Dallas selected Iowa defensive end Chauncey Golston and interestingly he has been one of the least-talked about rookies since draft day.

Matt Minich’s breakdown of Golston on the Blogging The Boys YouTube Channel highlights the defensive ends’ ability to help out in the run game. We all know how porous things have been for Dallas in that department in recent seasons, and while it is unlikely that there will be a huge amount of snaps available for Chauncey in 2021, if he he can develop over the course of this season the Cowboys might have a solid player on their hands in the near future.

There are plenty of other rookies on the Cowboys who seem to have larger narratives surrounding them. Micah Parsons is the team’s first-round pick and that brings with it a lot of pomp and circumstance. Kelvin Joseph plays cornerback which is the position that many people wanted to see addressed in the first round. Even someone like Nahshon Wright, also a third-round pick like Chauncey, has had more storylines due to the fact that he was a much larger unknown around draft time.

Sometimes rookies fly a bit under the radar, even third-round picks, which is just the way that things go. It will be fun to see how Chauncey performs at training camp and to see if he can quickly leapfrog last year’s drafted defensive end in Bradlee Anae.
