The “hope” is that he’ll be ready for Week 1

When the Minnesota Vikings selected Christian Darrisaw with the 23rd pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, they figured that they’d be able to pencil him at left tackle immediately.

Good thing they’re using pencil and not pen.

Close, Personal Friend of The Daily Norseman Tom Pelissero™ is reporting that Darrisaw was in Philadelphia yesterday having a “minor” core-muscle procedure done to attempt to fix the injury he’s been dealing with for months now. The hope is that Darrisaw is ready to go for Week 1.

However, that’s going to be a little tricky. To this point, Darrisaw has only done individual drills and has taken zero snaps with the offense in 11-on-11s or anything else. If he’s still battling this, even if the news is good, it’s going to be awfully difficult to expect him to be ready for the Vikings’ trip to Cincinnati in Week 1. He may be able to play, sure, but the expectation for him to start that one is definitely going to have to be tempered.

This means that, at least for now, Rashod Hill will continue to start at left tackle for the Vikings. Hill has shown flashes as a short-term starter in the past, and hopefully he’ll be able to stand up well enough to allow Darrisaw the time he needs to recover and get into the starting lineup.

Not the greatest possible start for the Vikings’ first-round pick and (hopefully) one of the future cornerstones of the team, but with any luck things will get better from here and Darrisaw will be back in relatively short order.
