Browns safety exited practice on Wednesday just one day after returning from a hamstring injury.

If it were not for bad luck, Cleveland Browns safety Grant Delpit would seemingly have no luck at all.

The second-year safety, who missed all of the 2020 season after suffering an Achilles injury in training camp, left practice on Wednesday after reaggravating his right hamstring injury. Delpit had just returned to practice on Tuesday after missing two weeks with an injury to the same hamstring.

In an interesting twist of fate, Delpit spoke to the media prior to Wednesday’s practice and talked about the need for the entire defense to be healthy when the season opens on September 12 (quotes via The Beacon Journal):

“I’m waiting on the day that we’re all healthy [on defense]. That’s the main thing — getting through camp healthy. I know people might be frustrated that we’re not out there practicing one day, but the main goal is getting ready for Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs.”

Not only is the injury frustrating for Delpit, it puts a kink on the plans of defensive coordinator Joe Woods, who has been hoping to implement a three-safety defense with Delpit, John Johnon III and Ronnie Harrison, who also just returned on Tuesday from his own hamstring issues.

Delpit missed two weeks of training camp with his initial hamstring injury, so if his latest injury turns out to be a similar situation, that would put his return to the field at September 1, which might still be enough time to get up to speed for the game 11 days later against the Chiefs.

If that is the case, then it could be a sign that Delpit’s luck is finally taking a turn in his favor.
