MRI news good on Baker Mayfield, good enough on Jarvis Landry

Mayfield reportedly has no structural damage to his injured shoulder, while Landry will be out for a few weeks with a sprained MCL.

The Cleveland Browns received some good news on Monday about quarterback Baker Mayfield and some expected news about wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

Both players underwent an MRI for the injuries they sustained during Sunday’s win against the Houston Texans. In Mayfield’s case, the outcome was a positive one as he suffered no structural damage to his left shoulder, according to cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.

Mayfield was injured with a little under 10 minutes remaining in the first half when he tackled Houston defensive back Justin Reid after Reid intercepted a pass intended for wide receiver Anthony Shwartz.

Mayfield was clearly in pain and went to the locker room, but did not miss an offensive series as he gutted out the rest of the game, finishing 19-of-21 for 213 yards, a passing touchdown, a rushing touchdown, and a quarterback rating of 105.

When asked about Mayfield during his media availability on Monday, head coach Kevin Stefanski did not have much of an update, other than to say that “(Mayfield) is sore … he is doing fine.”

As for Landry, the MRI confirmed that he suffered a sprained MCL on Cleveland’s second offensive play of the game when he was tackled after making a nine-yard reception. He went to the sidelines before heading to the locker room and was ruled out of the game in the third quarter.

While Stefanski said that Landry is currently “week-to-week” with the injury, the key takeaway from his comments is that the club is going to “work through all of those type of decisions over the next few days.”

Running back Nick Chubb missed four games last season when he suffered a sprained MCL, so it will be a surprise if the Browns do not place Landry on injured reserve in the next day or two, meaning that he would miss at least three games.
