Colts’ owner Jim Irsay spoke with fellow media members Thursday afternoon. Irsay spoke on what he believes his team’s expectations are going into this season.

“Well, the expectations are really high,” Irsay said. “There’s only some injury and some youth that you’re looking to move through hopefully quicker than slower with two Achilles that we’re dealing with and just the youthfulness of this draft.

Irsay went on to discuss what he believes the Colts’ defense could be, as well as what how well-rounded the offense is.

“When I look at that defense and I look at what it can be with that type of front seven and, certainly, with Kenny (Moore) and other guys in the secondary that I think is a much improved and underrated secondary,” Irsay said. “I see a really, really special defense. I do believe defenses win championships.”

Additionally, Irsay made sure to emphasize his belief in new starting quarterback Carson Wentz, as well as what he can potentially bring to the team this season.

“Obviously we’re all looking to see how Carson’s gonna do, and there’s every reason to believe that he’s gonna be a great football player for the Colts,” Irsay said. “I’m very excited about Carson.”

Irsay, when talking about Wentz, also added how excited the quarterback is as well as how great it is for he and Frank Reich to be reunited.

Colts’ reporter Zak Keefer highlighted Irsay’s comments, tweeting, “Jim Irsay on his new QB, Carson Wentz, acknowledging that so much of this season rests on Wentz’s shoulders: “He is absolutely in the place you want your quarterback to be in. He’s so, so excited. And he’s got a great coach behind him in Frank Reich.”

“I’m really excited,” Irsay said. “We have to go out and prove it. Even though you’re an outstanding team, you’re playing outstanding teams.”

Irsay, like many Colts players and fans, are ready for the 2021 season to be here. He recognizes what GM Chris Ballard and co. have built and just how special this team could be moving forward.

“Time will tell, but I’m very excited,” Irsay said.
