Damontae Kazee might be the most underrated free agent added by the Dallas Cowboys this offseason

Safety help was desperately needed by the Cowboys.

When it comes to the Dallas Cowboys defense there is one particular place where they have refused to devote legitimate resources in recent (more than that honestly) memory. Many fans have repeatedly thought that any given year would finally be the one for Dallas to draft someone to hold down things at the back end only to be left wrong and frustrated in the aftermath. While the Cowboys did not draft a safety highly this year again (they did select Israel Mukuamu in the sixth round), they did throw a number of darts at the position in free agency.

Now technically one of the safeties that the Cowboys signed in free agency, Keanu Neal, has already been moved away from the position to linebacker, but it is Neal’s former Atlanta Falcons teammate that could be one of the more notable additions when the season is all said and done.

Damontae Kazee was ultimately secured for the Cowboys for much less than they landed fellow safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix last year, but unlike Clinton-Dix, Kazee looks like he could be a legitimate contributor to the team.

Kazee was great at intercepting passes during his final two seasons at San Diego State and finally got to a point in Atlanta in 2018 (obviously under Dan Quinn) where he had success as well. He tied for the NFL’s lead in interceptions in 2018 with seven.

Consider that the entire 2019 Dallas Cowboys team had seven interceptions and that will really put into perspective just how massively someone with a propensity to generate turnovers can impact a defense. It isn’t necessarily realistic to expect Kazee to perform at that high of a level, plus his continued health is a big factor, but if he even comes close he will offer a lot to the Cowboys in that department that they have been missing for some time.
