It’s not clear why there was a delay, but as expected, the Falcons will be without Sheffield for at least three weeks.

It was reported that Kendall Sheffield was heading to injured reserve about a week ago, and I fully expected that to be one of the first moves made official once the Falcons cut down to their 53 man roster. Instead, we waited a long time, which raised the possibility that Sheffield was healthier than we had been led to believe and might return in the next week or so.

Alas, that wasn’t the case. The Falcons just announced that Sheffield will head to injured reserve after all, setting him up to miss at least three weeks.

What kind of role he’ll have when he gets back is anyone’s guess. The team’s willingness to keep him while he was injured over the past month suggests they want him on the roster as a reserve, and that means he shouldn’t have trouble finding a roster spot whenever he’s ready to come back. Whether he’s the team’s fourth cornerback or a deep reserve will likely depend on how Darren Hall, Avery Williams, and anyone else the team adds perform in the interim. We hope he’s healthy as soon as possible, either way.

Now we’ll wait and see who the team signs. Chris Williamson is a logical choice off of the practice squad if the Falcons want to add more cornerback depth, but assuming they view T.J. Green as a legitimate option there, they’re already six deep at corner and could always just call Williamson up for one week. If there’s another player they have their eye on, well, we’ll likely know soon enough.
