The former Lion just can’t escape knee problems.

The Detroit Lions surprised many back in May when they waived former second-round pick Kerryon Johnson from the team. The running back had a couple promising seasons in Detroit, but a knee injury had hampered a lot of his explosiveness.

Johnson didn’t remain on the market long, as the Philadelphia Eagles swiped Johnson up from waivers, inheriting his rookie contract. And although Johnson told Philadelphia media he believed his knee issues were behind him (despite wearing a permanent brace), it appears it has caught up with him again.

On Tuesday morning short of the NFL deadline to cut rosters down to 85 players, the Eagles waived Johnson with an injury designation. Just days before, Johnson was being evaluated for a knee injury and was considered week-to-week.

Now Johnson will hit waivers for the second time in three months, and if he is not claimed—which seems unlikely at this point—he could revert to the Eagles’ injured reserve list, ending his 2021 season (unless they release him from IR with an injury settlement).

It’s another unfortunate step in Johnson’s injury-riddled career. Let’s hope he gets back on his feet soon.
