Royce Freeman’s short Rams career comes to an end

The Los Angeles Rams will apparently not be bringing back running back Royce Freeman, as he is signing with the Dallas Cowboys. Freeman is becoming a real journeyman at the NFL level. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2018, went to the Carolina Panthers a few seasons later, then the Houston Texans, the Rams this past season and now reportedly the Cowboys, a team in dire need of running back help.

The information disclosed so far is that it’s a one-year deal so Freeman very well could find himself on another NFL squad in a year’s time.

Freeman made some splash plays for LA last year and filled in at times when starter Kyren Williams, was injured or needed a breather. Freeman is a former third round pick for Denver, so he’s always had talent. Whether it’s been lack of opportunity or performance, he has seemingly not been able to hang on to lead back duties. Perhaps that changes in Dallas as they would appear to have an open running back room right now between Freeman and Rico Dowdle. The team can still add through the draft.

For LA, they most likely need to figure out who they will add at RB to replace the loss of Freeman. Or perhaps second-year back, Zach Evans, is ready to take a step forward for the Rams, and or there is another answer on the roster. It’s also possible Les Snead and Sean McVay have a running back lined up in the draft.

Whatever else happens it would appear that LA will need to move forward without Freeman. It is unclear whether or not the Rams expected Freeman to be in their plans this upcoming season. He certainly isn’t anymore.
