Giants vs. Broncos ‘Kudos & Wet Willies’ review — the same sad song

Let’s review Giants vs. Broncos as only we can

It is a depressing Monday for New York Giants fans. They were treated to more of the same bad football they have witnessed for much of the past decade Sunday in a disturbingly un-competitive 27-13 loss to the Denver Broncos. Now, we have to do something we have become all-too familiar with — go through the carnage in our traditional ‘Kudos & Wet Willies’ review.

Kudos to …

Sterling Shepard — Shepard had a tremendous training camp, and followed that up with a terrific start to his season. He ended up with seven catches for 113 yards, including a 37-yard catch-and-run touchdown.

Logan Ryan — The veteran safety cam ready to play. He had 10 tackles, one for loss, and a quarterback hit. He also made this incredible play:

Andrew Thomas — The second-year left tackle was absolutely not part of the problem on Sunday. It may have helped that Denver edge rusher Bradley Chubb (ankle) did not play, but Thomas was solid. Let’s see if that continues with Chase Young and Montez Sweat coming up next.

Wet Willies to …

Third- and fourth-down defense — Aside from the one brilliant play by Ryan, the Giants’ defense could not get off the field when it needed to. Denver converted 7 of 15 (46.7 percent) on third downs, including four on a third-quarter touchdown drive. More importantly, they went 3 of 3 on fourth-down opportunities, leading to 17 of their 27 points.

Nate Solder/Matt Peart — Might as well lump these two guys together. Yes, Solder and Peart were lined up against future Hall of Famer edge defender Von Miller, which isn’t easy. Still, neither Solder nor Peart were good at all on Sunday.

Defense as a whole — The Giants were a top 10 defense a year ago. Having added Adoree’ Jackson and Azeez Ojulari, and with a healthy Xavier McKinney, defense should be a backbone of this team. Not Sunday. The third- and fourth downs were an issue. The Giants have up 420 yards, including 165 rushing. The middle of the field was open too often, and Teddy Bridgewater and Pat Shurmur exploited it. Defensive players (Ojulari, Danny Shelton, Darnay Holmes) committed a trio of personal foul penalties. Adoree’ Jackson, playing despite barely practicing since injuring an ankle three weeks ago, appeared to have a predictably rough game.

The offense — It was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day for the Giants’ offense. Thirteen points, including a meaningless final play of the game touchdown run by Daniel Jones, is not going to cut it.

Saquon Barkley (10 carries, 26 yards) had no impact on the game. Devontae Booker (four carries, 7 yards) was even less productive. Kadarius Toney had -2 yards on two catches and played only 5 snaps. Daniel Jones fumbled for the 30th time in 28 career games, killing both a potential scoring drive and any real chance the Giants had of making a comeback. Jones foolishly took on a pair of Denver defenders rather than slide. Solder snd Peart were awful. Two of Kenny Golladay’s four catches came in the final five minutes with the game hopelessly out of reach.

“We’ve just got to do it,” said wide receiver Sterling Shepard. “I feel like we have it in us and we’re capable of it. We’ve just got to practice every week and we’ve got to push and keep getting better. I know we’re capable of it, everybody knows we’re capable of it. We’ve just got to put it together and do it.”

The Giants need to stop talking and start scoring.

Kwillies to …

Azeez Ojulari — The rookie second-round pick had the first quarterback sack of his career. He also missed his second when he failed to bring Bridgewater down in the backfield, leading to a third-down conversion and eventual points for Denver. Ojulari also committed a roughing the passer penalty.
