The Indianapolis Colts got on the board Tuesday with their first expected signing of an outside free agent in the form of defensive tackle Raekwon Davis.

Nothing is official until 4:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, which is the official start of the new league year. However, the contract seems to be well in place, and we broke the two-year deal down.

On paper, Davis should be an upgrade to the defensive tackle depth the Colts had in 2023. There was arguably no depth behind starters Grover Stewart and DeForest Buckner, especially when it came to the former’s role.

Davis is a massive, space-eating defensive tackle with extreme length and power. He has the versatility to line up at both the one-technique and the three-technique defensive tackle positions.

Considering Taven Bryan played roughly 20 snaps per game during the 2023 season and rarely helped the Colts from the interior, it’s easy to see Davis sliding right into that role.

While Stewart and Buckner will certainly receive the most work at their respective positions, having Davis on hand to spell either one should prolong the value and stamina of the starters.

The contract is also a pretty simple, short-term deal. All of the guaranteed money is locked up in 2024, and the Colts can save $6.49 million against the cap if they need to part ways in 2025.

Overall, the Colts needed to find viable depth at defensive tackle, especially behind the aforementioned Stewart. There’s a good chance they’ve done that on a relatively cheap deal with Davis.

Grade: B
