The 2021 Jacksonville Jaguars will look quite a bit different than their 2020 counterpart, in large part because the entire coaching staff has been upended and replaced and the team picked a quarterback with the first overall pick. The team is also going through with a change in defensive schemes, so even that will look quite different.

Training camp starts just around the corner, so we can start looking through the positions to get an idea of where we are and what we can look to.

First up, the quarterback position.

Starter(s)

Yes, there is an “S” there in that heading, but make no mistake, I fully believe that rookie and first overall pick Trevor Lawrence is going to be the Day 1 starter. Lawrence has looked the real deal so far through OTAs and mini-camp, really to no one’s surprise. He is far and ahead the best quarterback on the roster, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Gardner Minshew II entered training camp as the “starter”.

A lot of coaches like to create the illusion of competition for rookie quarterbacks and make them compete and win the starting job and I am going to assume new head coach Urban Meyer is going to do the same thing.

Depth

After Lawrence, I would dare to say that the Jaguars depth chart for quarterback actually looks very good. As mentioned Minshew is likely going to be the No. 2 quarterback, but it could be a battle with newly signed free agent C.J. Beathard. By all accounts however, Beathard hasn’t been impressive at all in OTAs so it may not actually end up a competition. After Beathard you have Jake Luton entering his second year in the NFL. Luton had some spot starts and game time his rookie year in 2020, but it was a big time mixed bag after a hot start. It’s likely the third quarterback ends up between Luton and Beathard.
