Jets tried to poach Brett Rypien from Rams practice squad before L.A. promoted him

The Jets tried casting a wide net for quarterback options following the Achilles injury to Aaron Rodgers on Monday night. They are sticking with Zach Wilson for now but also considered other backup options as well.

We found out at least one of those potential options Thursday: Rams backup quarterback Brett Rypien. The Jets tried to poach Rypien from the Rams’ practice squad, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. The Rams shut that door by signing Rypien to their active roster.

The Rams were going to promote Rypien anyway as a practice squad elevation but caught win of New York’s interest, so they instead just signed him to the 53-man roster to back up Matthew Stafford — a once-Jets target himself.

The Jets currently have just two quarterbacks on the roster including the practice squad. Wilson is on the 53-man roster and Tim Boyle is on the practice squad and will likely be elevated this weekend to back up Wilson.

The Jets will likely continue to look over their options as the season progresses, especially if Wilson struggles but the Jets still find a way to win games on the heels of their defense.
