For the first time in a week and a half, all of the quarterbacks that the Minnesota Vikings started Training Camp with are available to the team during practice.

The Vikings have announced that they have activated rookie Kellen Mond from their COVID-19 list and brought him back to the active roster.

It was Mond that tested positive for COVID-19 back on 1 August, and his test caused fellow quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Nate Stanley to have to isolate for five days after being deemed unvaccinated close contacts. That left the Vikings with just one quarterback, third-year vet Jake Browning, to take all of the available quarterback snaps during the team’s night practice at TCO Stadium.

Mond was the first of the Vikings’ four third-round selections in this past April’s draft and is seen by many as the likely heir to the Vikings’ quarterback position when Kirk Cousins’ contract expires after the 2022 season. He is returning just in time to take part in the team’s joint practices with the Denver Broncos that will take place on Wednesday and Thursday before the two teams meet for their pre-season opener on Saturday afternoon.

Mond’s activation leaves the Vikings with five quarterbacks on the roster: Cousins, Browning, Mond, Stanley, and Danny Etling, who the Vikings signed during the period when Browning was their only available quarterback.

The article on the team’s website says that, at this point, the team doesn’t know if Mond will see any time during Saturday’s pre-season contest. With only three games this pre-season rather than the four that we’ve been used to over the years, this does not appear to be a great development for Mond and his prospects for 2022. It’s definitely something that we’ll need to keep an eye on as Training Camp comes to an end and the team rolls towards the 2021 regular season.
