The Chicago Bears are going to select quarteback Caleb Williams with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft — and they haven’t even tried to hide it. The USC star had an outstanding collegiate career and now he is ready to transition to the NFL with one of its most recognizable franchises.

Even Bears defensive end Montez Sweat knows Chicago is taking Williams with the first overall pick. He made that very clear on the “Green Light Podcast with Chris Long.”

When asked what advice he would give the incoming rookie quarterback, Sweat summed it up in two words.

“Be yourself,” Sweat said, adding: “Don’t try to do it all overnight. And just stay humble.”

Sweat also stressed leaning on a strong supporting cast already in place.

“Don’t try to do it all by yourself, you got a great group of guys around you – I know you seen the pieces, Keenan Allen, [D’Andre] Swift from Philly — we got some guys,” Sweat said. “So just be humble and be yourself. He’s obviously a talented guy so I would just say don’t try to do it all in one night.”

This is important for Williams. A lot of times, these highly touted college quarterbacks are drafted by bad teams and are expected to be the savior. Now and again, a guy like Joe Burrow comes around and gets it done. Most of the time, however, they end up like Mitchell Trubisky, Zach Wilson, or Baker Mayfield where it just doesn’t work out with the team that drafts them.

If the Bears don’t put a ton of pressure on Williams, he will be just fine. It seems like a leader like Sweat plans on preaching that as they move into training camp. He knows that Williams’ success will be a big factor in the success of the team, so it is important for him to be a good mentor.

With a ton of great veterans on both sides of the ball, it should be easy for Williams to take this advice. He doesn’t have to do it all in one night so he can stay humble and be himself, just like Sweat suggested.
