Good morning, Gang Green Nation! The big recent news regarding the New York Jets is that they failed to come to an agreement with safety Marcus Maye on a long term extension prior to the July 15 deadline. As a result, the two sides will not be permitted to resume negotiations until after the end of the 2021 season, and Maye will play the 2021 season under the $10.6 million franchise tag. This seemed the most likely outcome once the Jets head coach Robert Saleh disclosed several weeks ago that the Jets view Maye as a strong safety, and LaMarcus Joyner as the free safety. Maye at strong safety is a fine payer, but he just is not going to be a high impact player at that position. Maye is not much of a factor in the pass rush, and his run defense is perfectly capable, but he isn’t a guy who will blow up a ton of plays in the opponent’s backfield. The bottom line here is Maye will be 29 years old next March. Paying mega bucks to a 29 year old strong safety who does not make a lot of high impact plays was never in the cards.
