In a recent article naming the most underpaid player on every team in the NFL after 2024 free agency, linebacker Jack Gibbens was the pick for the Tennessee Titans.

According to Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon, Dr. Gibby “shined” in 2023 after posting 95 tackles and making less than $1 million.

The undrafted 25-year-old worked for less than $1 million last year and will do so again in 2024. Not a bad deal for a guy who shined with 95 tackles in 2023.

It’s true that less than $1 million is extremely cheap for player who started in 2023, saying Gibby “shined” is too much. He was serviceable, at best, and I’d imagine the Titans would prefer a better option this coming season.

Looking ahead to 2024, Gibbens stands as the favorite to start once again, but that’s only because the Titans are extremely thin at the position. They signed Kenneth Murray in free agency but lost Gibbens’ starting mate from last season, Azeez Al-Shaair, who signed with the Houston Texans.

The fact of the matter is, Dr. Gibby is best suited as a backup linebacker and special teams contributor. The fact that he was basically shoved into a starting role last season doesn’t change that or make him underpaid.

A better choice for the distinction is probably running back Tyjae Spears, who is coming off an impressive rookie campaign and looks set to have a bigger role in 2024. The Tulane product’s base salary is a shade under $1 million for this coming season and he accounts for a cap hit of just $1.2 million.

If he can prove he’s “the guy” in his second season, it’s safe to say that quarterback Will Levis will shoot ahead of Spears.
