Missed out on a trade target

There was heavy speculation that the Washington Commanders were going to try to trade back into the first round last night after selecting LSU QB Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick. The draft came and went, and there were no deals made by new GM Adam Peters, but he reportedly did attempt to trade up per Tony Pauline.

Earlier this week, I reported that the Washington Commanders would try and trade into the back end of Round 1 for Jordan Morgan, and that’s exactly what they attempted to do late last night, albeit unsuccessfully. I’m told Washington worked the phones with teams that held picks in the mid-to-late 20s, hoping to move up and draft Morgan.

Speculation is that they were attempting to move to the Lions’ pick at 29 for Morgan, but Detroit eventually moved ahead of the Packers and selected Terrion Arnold, which took a top target for Green Bay off the board before they selected the offensive lineman from Arizona themselves, dooming the Commanders’ plans.

The Washington Commanders had eight picks to use as trade capital, along with possible future picks. The top offensive tackles are off the board now, but there are still several offensive line players that could be added on Day 2. Jordan Morgan, who Washington was reportedly targeting, had questions about what position he would play in the NFL, with some people projecting him to guard. Peters was not looking to get into the late teens to catch one of the last top tier OTs(Troy Fautanu) who went to the Steelers at No. 20.
