The Tre Flowers era in Seattle is over.

Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday that the much-maligned Seahawks cornerback has been released upon his request.

Two weeks ago Flowers lost his starting job to Sidney Jones, who shifted over to LCB while D.J. Reed returned to RCB. He converted from safety to corner when he was drafted back in 2018 and unexpectedly became the starter. While he showed signs of promise, he has never developed any sort of consistency to justify being an NFL starter. Pro Football Reference stats say quarterbacks are 13/17 for 190 yards and a touchdown when targeting him in 2021, with an average depth of target at 11.6 yards.

The other aspect of this departure is that rookie CB Tre Brown is ready to come off of injured reserve, and the Seahawks need to make room on the 53-man roster for both him and Ethan Pocic.

I think it’s fair to say that even though Jones has hardly impressed in Flowers’ place, the moment that the first major defensive shake-up was to bench Flowers, the writing was on the wall for him, and it looks as if he knew it too.
