One of the many reasons some believe the Tennessee Titans won’t retain running back Derrick Henry is the emergence of 2023 third-round pick and running back, Tyjae Spears.

Despite playing behind one of the worst offensive lines in the sport and splitting snaps with Henry evenly, Spears had a solid rookie season, tallying 453 rushing yards, 385 receiving yards, and three total touchdowns. Spears’ rushing yards were fifth among rookie backs and his 838 scrimmage yards ranked fourth among first-year backs.

The Tulane product was also ranked in the top 20 (No. 18) in PFF grade at the position and was one of three backs to sport a PFF grade north of 70 in rushing, receiving and pass protection, along with Henry and Atlanta Falcons rusher Tyler Allgeier.

During his combine press conference on Tuesday, general manager Ran Carthon made it quite clear he’s very high on Spears and provided an awesome quote on the 22-year-old.

“Tyjae is passionate about football; he loves the game and is a hard worker,” Carthon said. “Tyjae is one of those guys that is always in the building. I know there were concerns about his knee coming out, and that was the big question, but we’re talking about a guy who never missed practice or a game.”

“For lack of a better way to put it, he’s made of the right s—,” the Titans GM added.

Whether Henry returns or not, the expectation is that Spears will see a bigger workload in his second season.

The only question is: who will be the running back that complements him?
