Could the New York Jets use their first-round pick to trade for a star wide receiver?

The rumors never stop churning on draft weekend, and the latest one could have massive implications for the New York Jets.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, “The 49ers have had conversations with teams, including with one picking in the top 10, about trading either of their prized wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel in an effort to move up in the first round.” With the Jets slotted at No. 10 and needing a wide receiver, this could make them a potential candidate to talk with the 49ers about a trade for Aiyuk or Samuel.

This would be a major move for San Francisco, as Samuel and Aiyuk have been major contributors to their offense over the past few seasons. But with Aiyuk up for an extension, Samuel having a big number against the cap, and the 49ers having Brock Purdy up for an extension soon, a trade to get younger and cheaper at wide receiver is a possibility.

From the Jets’ perspective, Aiyuk would be a slam-dunk addition. His elite skill set would form a dynamic duo with Garrett Wilson, as Aiyuk is a top-tier separator down the field. His blocking is also top-notch at the position, something the Jets value in their skill players.

The question is how the Jets would be able to afford Aiyuk. Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall, Sauce Gardner, Jermaine Johnson, and Michael Carter II will be seeking contract extensions soon.

In all likelihood, trading for Aiyuk is a longshot for the Jets. But if they can pull off the deal and choose to extend him over other players, the second-team All-Pro receiver has shown that he would be a worthwhile investment in a trade involving the 10th overall pick.
