Robert Saleh says NY Jets will not change play-callers next week

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh immediately shut down the possibility of changing play-callers, despite the offense’s historic struggles

The New York Jets are choosing to stick with their maligned offensive coordinator.

Speaking after getting blown out by the Miami Dolphins 34-13, head coach Robert Saleh said that the Jets will not be moving away from Nathaniel Hackett as the team’s play-caller. When asked, Saleh stated, “There is no consideration” to change anything on the offensive staff.

The Jets’ head coach elaborated on his decision later in his media availability.

“It would be a really long answer, answer for another day. When you look at it all – and again, it’s a little bit of everything, whether the calls could be better, whether the execution can be better, whether our one-on-one battles could be better – it’s taking advantage of the situations we have when we get them. Do I think play-caller will fix that? I don’t know. I don’t have an answer for you on that one,” said Saleh.

It is surprising that the Jets are unwilling to change the play-caller when every other part of their offense has been shifted.

Zach Wilson was benched for Tim Boyle, and Boyle himself may soon be benched as well. Veterans like C.J. Uzomah, Dalvin Cook, and Randall Cobb have seen their playing time evaporate. Allen Lazard, one of the Jets’ key off-season signings, was a healthy scratch due to performance.

Yet, the play-caller of an offense that has scored two offensive touchdowns in the past three games is not in danger of losing his role.

Hackett, between his severe lack of creativity and questionable play-calling in all facets of the game, has played a major role in the Jets having an offense on pace to be one of the worst in NFL history.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the Jets’ offensive issues are fundamental. The offensive line, penalties, quarterback, playmakers, and play-calling have all contributed to the Jets’ season spiraling out of control.

The Jets have opted to change all but one of those issues, though. If Saleh opts to keep Hackett as play-caller for the rest of the season, there is a high chance the Jets finish with one of their worst offensive seasons of all time.

While the return of Rodgers could keep their jobs safe, the continued ineptitude could ultimately end up costing Saleh and the rest of this Jets’ regime their jobs.
