Random Ramsdom: Recapping recent NFC West backup quarterback moves

Los Angeles Rams News and Links for 3/21/24

It all seemingly started with the Arizona Cardinals trading Desmond Ridder, then the Seattle Seahawks made a move for Sam Howell, the Los Angeles Rams signed Jimmy Garoppolo, and finally the San Francisco 49ers added Josh Dobbs. Just like that, the entire of NFC West has new backup quarterbacks. There is a real chance that any of these players can start as injury can strike any starting quaterback at any time.

Some may think this isn’t the most exciting news, but I think quarterback movement is good to keep track of. With all the Aaron Donald news I thought it would be relevant to take a moment and look at some of the change going around in the NFC West. There is still the draft and the rest of the offseason to go. Who knows how much more change there will be?

49ers sign QB Josh Dobbs to a one-year deal worth $2.25 million guaranteed (ninersnation)

“It’s unlikely that Dobbs will cost the same as Sam Darnold did a season ago, so the 49ers should be coming out ahead financially for their backup quarterback. Sure enough, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Dobbs’ deal includes $2.25 million, which is fully guaranteed, with $750,000 in playing time incentives. Last season, Darnold was guaranteed $3.5 million at the time of signing.”

“When you ask a fan how they’d approach the draft there’s two usual answers. BPA (Best Player Available) or BNA (Biggest Need Available). There’s also the middle ground Best Player Available at a Position of Need. But that’s called being a coward and trying to ride the fence, also it’s a rubbish acronym.

Both “strategies” lack nuance however and quickly come unstuck with a question of slight difficulty. For BPA, what happens when the best player is not a scheme fit, or your team is already stacked at that position. Do you double or triple dip at a position just because at each pick they’re BPA? You probably don’t. With BNA, what if the players with your biggest needs are a huge reach? Do you take a player a round? Two rounds? early just because you have a need at that position. You risk missing out on much better players if you do that.”
