The Houston Texans are committing to newly acquired running back Joe Mixon with a new contract.

Mixon signed a three-year, $27 million deal with $13 million guaranteed, according to KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson.

The commitment to Mixon is significant in that it’s more than he would have cost to the team in 2024 on his original contract. The base value of the deal is $25.5 million, per Pro Football Talk, with an additional $500,000 per year in other incentives. Mixon will make $9 million in 2024 instead of $6 million with a $1 million roster bonus as well. Mixon will earn $4 million in 2025.  The final year will non-guaranteed — right when Mixon hits 30 years old.

“They’re definitely getting a playmaker,” Mixon said at his introductory press conference. “I think the way things are being explained in the meetings that they’re willing to showcase everything that I can do, which has been exciting.

“I’ve been waiting for this a long time, and I can’t wait to make the most of every opportunity that I can because I just know the type of player that I am and the guys that’s around here and the supporting cast around, I think that I definitely could take this thing to the next level.”

Mixon was entering the final year of his current contract before Houston traded a seventh-round pick to acquire the veteran running back. He rushed for 1,034 and nine touchdowns this past season, his seventh with the team.

The Bengals planned to release Mixon after Cincinnati signed running back Zack Moss, but the Texans swooped in to acquire the 27-year-old this week. Houston now has a bonafide starting running back for C.J. Stroud, one they didn’t really have in 2023 after starting the year with Dameon Pierce and ending with Devin Singletary.

Houston wanted to upgrade their running back unit. Mixon is a good start.
