Former Chargers tight end Antonio Gates, safety Rodney Harrison and defensive end Dwight Freeney were named modern-era semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024 on Tuesday.
This is the first time Gates has been named a semifinalist. This is the second time Freeney has been named a semifinalist. This is the third time Harrison has been named a semifinalist. Each player has never been named a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Gates was an eight-time Pro Bowler, three-time First Team All-Pro, two-time Second Team All-Pro and he made the Hall of Fame All-2000s team. He finished his career with 11,841 receiving yards and 116 touchdowns.
Freeney played in the 2013 and 2014 seasons with the Chargers. He earned a Super Bowl ring with the Colts in 2007 and three first-team All-Pro nods and seven trips to the Pro Bowl. He finished tied with former Raven Terrell Suggs for 17th on the all-time list.
Harrison finished his career with three Pro Bowls, two Super Bowl rings, 1,206 career tackles and 34 interceptions. He was named to the 50th-anniversary teams of both the Chargers and Patriots.
