We’ve become accustomed to a show when the team reports for camp — but there’s not likely to be much of one this season.

On Friday, Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks and rookies — along with some veteran players who were working through injuries — reported to training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri.

On Monday morning, the team concluded the last of three closed practices for that group. As usual, the injured veterans — and quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Chad Henne — were held out of the final pre-camp session, in order to give coaches as much of a look at the new rookies as possible. According to Kansas City Star Chiefs beat reporter Herbie Teope, rookie wide receiver Chris Finke — injured during Sunday’s session — was also held out.

On Monday afternoon, the rest of the team’s 90-man roster will report. But unlike in previous seasons, it is not expected to be much of a show. Now-retired Chiefs fullback Anthony Sherman will not be raising eyebrows with a crazy first-day-of-training-camp outfit or stunt — and with public attendance restrictions in place for the 2021 camp, there will be little incentive for other players to do the same. Maybe next year, yes?

We do, however, expect to hear from several newly-arrived Chiefs veterans at a late-afternoon press conference. Late on Monday morning, Chiefs president Mark Donovan and Missouri Western president Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy will also hold their annual training camp session with reporters.

There will be no practice on Tuesday. We expect the fully-assembled team will be busy with meetings. The first full practice — open only to Chiefs season-ticket holders — will be on Wednesday morning, followed by the first public practice on Thursday.

Unlike in previous seasons, fans must reserve tickets to attend practices. Full details — and the complete training camp schedule — may be found here.
