Detroit Lions not concerned with Amon-Ra St. Brown’s slow statistical start

The Lions rookie only has 43 yards through three games, but Detroit isn’t sweating it.

Detroit Lions fourth-round pick Amon-Ra St. Brown was one of the more hyped players in training camp. His tremendous work ethic was obvious to anyone paying attention, and his gritty attitude on the field made him an easy stand out to both fans and coaches. Oh, he was also catching a ton of passes and giving Lions defenders fits early in camp.

But that production hasn’t carried over to the regular season through three games. He’s only seen 10 passes thrown his way and turned that into just six catches and 43 yards—the same production the Lions have gotten out of late trade target Trinity Benson.

So is he going through some rookie troubles? Has he not developed chemistry with quarterback Jared Goff yet? Is this simply a case of just not getting his turn yet? Goff wasn’t quite sure yet.

“That’s a good question. I don’t know,” Goff said this week. “We’d love to get him the ball. He’s always in the game plan. He’s always a part of what we want to do. Yeah, just probably a circumstance, not something that is any bit intentional or anything like that. We’re trying to get him the ball as much as we can.”

Offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn had a different perspective. While he may not getting the targets or catches, he’s still making an impact on the game.

“He’s doing a heckuva job, but some of the ways he’s helping the team doesn’t show up in the stat column,” Lynn said. “His route running, his blocking is unbelievable. He’s doing some really good things. I’m very pleased with him.”

You may remember back in Week 1, St. Brown tallied two huge blocks that drew some attention on Twitter.

“I’ve always kind of had that mentality, that blocking mentality in me. I think it’s huge,” St. Brow said after the 49ers game.

As for the chemistry with the quarterback or going through any rookie pains, Goff doesn’t believe that’s the issue with St. Brown.

“No, I feel like he’s good. He’s been good since he got here and is ready for those touches I would imagine.”
