Last Sunday night the news broke that the Pittsburgh Steelers are planning to sign former Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson. This was after several weeks of rumor and speculation about Wilson and possibly Justin Fields joining the team.

Wilson is joining the Steelers on a one-year contract and will need to secure the starting job over incumbent Kenny Pickett.

As Wilson prepares for his 13th season, he is coming off of a disappointing two-year run with the Denver Broncos after a monumental run with the Seattle Seahawks.

This signing is sure to divide the fanbase even further, and create more infighting and all because the team is trying to win now and worrying about the future later. Despite all the posturing by general manager Omar Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin, it is hard to imagine they felt like Pickett is the answer.

Is Wilson the answer? That depends on the question.  If the question is all the Steelers contenders in the AFC now, the answer is probably still no. If the question is are the Steelers better than last season the answer is well, probably. This is a one-year rental of a guy past his prime who a new offensive coordinator can hopefully build around for a season. Nothing about this move gives anyone faith for the future beyond this season.
